Secret 6: Focus your Future

Always embrace your “why”

“It’s your job to keep your passion hot.” – Bill Hybels, Global Leadership Summit

What does your life look like now that you are past the launch phase? Is it crazy busy with the details of getting through the day or thinking about how you will raise capital for survival?

How much time do you spend planning for the future of your business? We’re referring to the actual process of planning, not the finished product of a plan, but instead thinking through the sustainability of your business. If you are like most entrepreneurs you might be short on cash, employees, and always looking for the next sale. It can be overwhelming and at times all consuming. The mindset is thinking about the future is something to think about tomorrow.

When you started your business, you saw an opportunity to fill a void you saw in the marketplace. That one thing you grabbed hold of and built a business on. What was it that gave you the idea and the desire to do what you do? Bill Hybels calls it your “white-hot why” (as in the white-hot heat of the flame of the fire.) It is what fuels your passion. What is your white-hot why?

As you look at the future, find the intersection between your passion and the market opportunity. The market is like a weather vane – pointing in the direction of the wind. But to plot your course, you need a compass. Your passion is your compass – it identifies your true north and helps you steer your business in the direction that meets the market opportunity while fueling your inner drive.

In the day-to-day running of your business, it can be easy to lose sight of that passion. Take time to nurture the spark that keeps fueling your passion. You must never lose it. That passion is the compass that carries you forward and will sustain you as an entrepreneur for the long-haul.

The white-hot why that started me on this journey and will always fuel my passion and sustain my business:

BE STRONG: Cling to the inner spark that gave you the idea and the desire to do this.
BE COURAGEOUS: Never stop fueling your passion.
BE BOLD:Trust your white-hot why.
